Living Unoffended: Daring to Be Different

Unoffendable: Daring To Be Different

REFLECTIONS FROM ▶ GREG'S  MESSAGE ON 7/21/24

Living Unoffended

How we live in a world filled with hostility and division? Our challenge, as followers of Jesus, is to rise above the fray and model a different way of living. Jesus didn’t come to take sides; He came to take over. He calls us to live unoffended in a world that’s quick to judge and slow to love.

It's easy to get caught up in the negativity and polarization that surrounds us. We see it in the news, on social media, and sometimes even in our own communities. The rhetoric in our country continues to get more hostile, more hateful, and more divisive. But as followers of Jesus, we are called to something higher. We are called to demonstrate a different way of living—a way that reflects the unconditional love and grace of God.

Reflect on This

What is your response to those who are different from you?

Consider how you react to people who disagree with you. Do you lead with judgment or with love? It's important to take a moment to reflect on our initial reactions and ask ourselves if they align with the teachings of Jesus. Are we quick to judge, or do we take the time to understand and show compassion?

How can you show generous love in your daily interactions?

Think about practical ways you can demonstrate love that goes beyond what is expected. This could be something as simple as offering a kind word to a stranger, being patient with a coworker, or lending a helping hand to a neighbor in need. Generous love means going the extra mile, even when it's inconvenient or difficult.

Be More Like Jesus

We are called to be like Jesus, to lead with love in every situation. This isn't always easy, but it’s always better. When we remember our own need for grace, it becomes easier to offer it to others. Every person we encounter is a broken mess that Jesus loves and thought was worth dying for—just like us.

Jesus set the ultimate example of leading with love. He washed the feet of His disciples, including those who would betray and deny Him. He spent time with the outcasts and showed compassion to those society had written off. Following Jesus means embracing this radical love and extending it to everyone we meet, regardless of their background or beliefs.

A Final Thought

How can you remind yourself of your need for grace?

When tempted to judge, think about your own mistakes and how much you need God’s grace. Let this humble you and lead you to love others more deeply. Remembering our own imperfections and the grace we've received can help us approach others with the same kindness and understanding.

Practical Steps to Live Unoffended

Here are a few practical steps to help you live unoffended in a divisive world:

  • Pause and Pray: When you feel offended or tempted to judge, take a moment to pause and pray. Ask God to help you see the person through His eyes and to respond with love.

  • Seek Understanding: Instead of jumping to conclusions, seek to understand the other person's perspective. This doesn't mean you have to agree with them, but it shows respect and opens the door for meaningful dialogue.

  • Practice Forgiveness: Holding onto grudges only harms us. Choose to forgive, even when it's hard. Let go of the bitterness and allow God's peace to fill your heart.

  • Engage in Acts of Kindness: Look for opportunities to show kindness every day. Whether it's through volunteering, helping a neighbor, or simply being there for a friend in need, small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

  • Surround Yourself with Positive Influences: Spend time with people who uplift and encourage you. Engage with content that inspires and motivates you to be your best self.

Moving Forward

So, let's spend some time today asking for help to be more like Jesus. Let's lead with love, be generous with our grace, and always strive to see the worth in every person we encounter. By doing this, we can create a ripple effect of love and positivity in a world that desperately needs it.

Keep coming back to hear more stories of faith, love, and transformation. Together, we can make a difference.
